As reported on Arcadis press relase dated 24th March "One of the biggest challenges of this century is the improvement of the quality of life in the rapidly growing cities all over the world."
The world has entered the urban millennium as for the first time in human history more than half of the world's population lives in cities. Almost one billion of them live in slums and substandard housing. If nothing is done, this number will double in the next thirty years. Arcadis and UN-HABITAT will partner to address this challenging and urgent problem.
Arcadis an Arnhem-based international company providing consultancy, design, engineering and management services and UN-Habitat, the lead UN agency for housing and urban development will focus on two main activities (i) participation of Arcadis employees in UN-HABITAT projects, for example, the recovery program for Haiti where they bring in their expertise, and (ii) transfer of expertise in urban planning and development through the organization of seminars for city officials from around the world, for example in the field of climate change adaptation.
Arcadis will also become a main sponsor of the World Urban Campaign, an initiative from UN-HABITAT designed to raise public awareness and to address the social, economic and environmental challenges of urbanization. More information on the project is found here.
