Floral art and Falconry at Castle Arcen

E-mail Print PDF

arcen-castleCastle  Arcen was built by the Dukes of Gelre in the 17th century. The present castle was built on the ruins of the former castle which in turn was built on the remains of the first Castle 'Huys den Kamp. It was built in the Baroque period. Baroque distinguishes itself by extravagant forms and expressions of power - the quest for greatness. The building lost its left side during a fire in the 19th century. This part of the building was never rebuilt. The castle is now open to exhibitions and many events and activities are organized through out the year.

In the month of May Castle Arcen presents two original events:

Floral Factor - The Natural Rhythm from April 29 to 31 May 2010:
A special exhibition by florists Pim van den Akker and Peter van der Sluis. They are leading florists when it comes to innovations in the field of flower, making them household names in the floral world. The exhibition consists of a large number of floral art exhibitons at various prominent places in the gardens. The basis of this art are organic materials such as tree bark, metal, roots, branches, leaves, and cork.  The beautiful surroundings of Castle Arcen contributes to the unique look of the designs.

'The Hawk Falconry Farm ': falconry demonstrations from April 29 to 31 May 2010

Falconry Hawk Farm was created by Diana ten Klooster who has a passion for raptors and owls in particular. Falconry is an ancient art that Diana would like to preserve. She trains her birds of pray every day so that the birds get in good condition and they are able to fly free.

Watch and enjoy the free flights of the birds of prey and be surprised at how close to you Diana's raptors may fly sometimes.
Several species of raptors are present during this demonstrations: buzzards, hawks, owls and an eagle.

But what is Falconry then?  "Falconry is not a hobby; it’s a lifestyle," according to Ted Benzon, administrator for the falconry program for South Dakota’s Game Fish & Parks Department. Falconers must devote time to their birds each and every day, 365 days a year.It is an art and it requires long hours, constant devotion, finesse, subtlety and skill. The falconer must train a bird of prey to fly free, hunt for a human being and then accept a return to captivity (learn more about falconry here.)http://www.pbs.org/falconer/falconry/index.htm
