Expat Teens Talk - Peers, Parents and Professionals offer support, advice and solutions in response to Expat Life challenges as shared by Expat Teens

Being a teenager is tough. Being a teenager growing up in another country, another culture, maybe attending your tenth school and with no lifetime friends or nearby relatives to turn to can be tougher still. This is why Dr. Lisa Pittman (a psychologist from the USA) and Diana Smit (an expatriate mother and educational therapist from Canada), two expatriates based in Singapore, were inspired to write this book.

When teenagers relocate, the access they have to a ‘support system’ changes. Who can they talk to, and confide in? With whom can they share their challenges and how can they ensure they will get the support they need?
Expatriate Teenagers acquire a global consciousness that it has been argued will make them more broad-minded than their non-mobile peers and even the global leaders of the future. But is this benefit of life on the move something of a poisoned chalice?

"Dealing with constant change; a new country, a new school, new friends, a new house, and so on, can be overwhelming for anyone. For Expat Teenagers, who move from country to country, these changes can often make them feel very alone.  When everything is new, as a result of yet another move, it can be a struggle to find that one special person to confide in and talk to about what they are going through and how they feel when everything in their life keeps changing," explains Smit.

"They are just like other teens, with the typical concerns and difficulties that accompany being an adolescent – in essence, they are 'just like everybody else',” says Dr. Pittman.

"That said, these students are 'not like everybody else' precisely because of the experiences mentioned above," continues Pittman.

This book fills that gap, providing advice, support, and solutions voiced by those who can help: Expat Peers, Expat Parents, and Expat Professionals – people who relate to a transient lifestyle and speak with the knowledge of their own Expat Lives.

“Congratulations for developing a resource that gives internationally mobile teens hope and understanding about their world.”
Ian Moody, Head of Counselling, United World College of South EastAsia, Singapore
