Being a teenager is tough. Being a teenager growing up in another country, another culture, maybe attending your tenth school and with no lifetime friends or nearby relatives to turn to can be tougher still.
 This is why Dr. Lisa Pittman (a psychologist from the USA) and Diana Smit (an expatriate mother and educational therapist from Canada), two expatriates based in Singapore, were inspired to write this book.

Exhibition at MMKA: "Six Yards Guaranteed Dutch Design"

As early as 1846, the Vlisco company, based in Helmond, served the West African market with Dutch Wax textiles. From 29 January through 6 May, 2012, the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem will present Six Yards Guaranteed Dutch Design, an exhibition about how Vlisco’s Dutch textiles became a part of various West African cultures and found their way into international fashion, the visual arts, and photography. The exhibition Six Yards is a tribute to Vlisco textiles: over a hundred years old, born in Indonesia, designed in the Netherlands, loved in Africa, and desired in the West.

Rubens, Van Dyck & Jordaens: Flemish painters from the Hermitage

Until 15 June 2012, the Hermitage Amsterdam will present a stunning selection from the Flemish art collection of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. With 75 paintings and about 20 drawings, this definitive survey will include numerous masterpieces by the three giants of the Antwerp School – Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Jacob Jordaens – accompanied by the work of well-known contemporaries.

An afternoon of traditional Indian music

Sunday, Feb 12, 2-4 pm at Het Spiegelhuis, Arnhem

Indian music follows a long and unbroken tradition over the past 2500 years and is represented by a variety of different genres from classical and semi-classical to folk and popular music. This concert features the sounds of traditional North Indian music.The selection of songs, some of which were written by famous Indian Saint-poets, date back to the 15th and 16th centuries and are based mainly on themes of love, devotion and spirituality. They are interpreted through the ragas of Hindustani Classical music in the traditional style, emphasizing the meaning and creating a mood, highlighted by particular vocal techniques and the play of the accompanying instruments.
